Memoir versus Biography

Memoirs are written in the first person point of view by an author who provides readers with a personal view of his/her life. How is this a different reading experience than reading a biography, which is written in 3rd person point of view about someone else's life?

  1. A memoir is actually dialoged with I instead of he, she, they. it is also written in the persons point of view instead of someone else's point of view.

  2. There are a lot of differences between memoirs and biographies. Memoirs are more of a story, and biographies are more factual. Also biographies are usually about a person's who life while memoirs are about a certain time in someones life.

  3. First Person, is written like "I thought" or "I think." Whereas Third Person is written like "Jemimah thought" or "Jemimah thinks."

  4. You get to see what the people were actually thinking, so instead of "In 1987, Bernadette Smith left her home in New York City to live in Pennsylvania with the Amish", you get "In 1987, I decided to take a break from life and and go live with the Amish!" You get to get a more personal view of their life.

  5. In a memoir you get more emotion and feeling because that person has really experienced what they are writing about. Whereas in a biography you really only get the facts and not the feelings.

  6. 1st person is written with "I" and the author is talking about themselves, but 3rd person is written with "he" or "she"; when the author is talking about someone else.

  8. A biography is someone writing about someone else. A memoir is more of a story and is usually written by the main character of the memoir.

  10. You feel like she is there with you retelling you the story. I like them better then biography's because it is just facts this is putting it in the story mode.

  11. Memoirs are written with I instead of he or she, are usually a little deeper and focus on a main part of someone's life. Biographies are usually about someone's whole life, not just one part of it.

    1. I agree! Often it's more interesting to read about the specific event. this is Katherine.

  12. Memoirs are special because the people reflect about their life and the more interesting things that happened in it. Biographies are more informational and less descriptive, and memoirs are by point of view of the author.

  13. Memoirs are written in first person, and biographies are not always. Memoirs are sometimes written about a specific part of someones live, and biographies are more like the persons whole life span.

  14. Memoirs are more like diaries to me, with the person's inner thoughts instead of facts about their life

  15. A memoir is a 1st person narration about someones life in a certain time or subject. For example Rocket Boys is about Omar Hickum's teenager years when he and his friends build rockets. Biographies are told in 3rd person and tell about someones whole life and what they did.

  16. In a memoir you are writing about yourself and in a biography you are writing about someone else. You are writing in first person if you are writing a memoir and in a biography you are writing in third person.

  17. A memoir is about a event that has sparked someones life, and a biography is about someones whole life.

  18. In a memoir, it's more focused on a particular event and the aftermath then on the whole story. Also, with a memoir, you see more inner thoughts because the character is the narrator, instead of it being 3rd person.

  19. For me reading a memoir is easier and more fun to read, unlike the biography which is more structured. A memoir is more fun to read because it was written by the person who lived it, so the story's are not only more true but more detailed.

  20. I feel like you can get more of the author personally and can connect more to the personal notes that the author puts in his/her memoir. You don't really get the same feeling in a biography because it's not written by that person.

  21. Memoirs are more personal. They are easier to read because biographies are boring and factual.Memoirs are more fictional.

  23. for me, reading a memoir seems like the events are happening right then. I like reading memoirs more than biographies

  24. memoirs are basically events or certain phases in someone's life
biographies are more about someone's entire life.

  25. memoirs are focusing more on a certain event in a persons life like a war, political event, integration and stuff like that. biographies are more factual telling when they were born and how their life went.

  26. i like reading memoir so you can read just the interesting point in the persons life. but if you read autobiography you have to read about hte persons whole life (which can get really boring)

  27. Memoirs show more feeling, and are about someone remembering a past event. Biographies state facts about a certain event and are meant to tell information.

  28. Memoirs are usually much more detailed than Biographies, and tend to have more passion and emotion within them.
Also, the author refers to the characters in the 1st person (I, me, mine, my) instead of the 3rd person (he, she, they, them, it, hers. his, him, her, theirs).
